Reasons You May Need a Dental Extraction
A dental extraction involves the removal of a tooth from its socket in the gum. Both dentists and oral surgeons can perform a dental extraction and there are many reasons why extractions are performed. These reasons include:
- Removal of baby teeth to make way for adult teeth.
- Damage to the tooth as a result of an accident or injury.
- Tooth decay or infection that is unable to be resolved through other methods.
- To prepare for orthodontic work such as braces.
- To correct overcrowding in your mouth.
- As part of a cosmetic dentistry treatment plan to improve your smile.
- To remove impacted or problematic wisdom teeth.
If you believe you have reason to undergo dental extraction for any of the above reasons, make an appointment to visit Cranebrook Dental today.
How to Prepare For a Tooth Extraction
Should your dentist advise that dental extraction is necessary, they will undertake a few necessary steps to prepare you.
- You will have a discussion regarding your medical and dental history. This is to check for any pre-existing conditions that could complicate the procedure or your recovery.
- X-rays are then taken to allow proper revision of the tooth’s shape and position. This includes checking its proximity to facial nerves and your jaw bone.
Should your dentist determine that your extraction is more complex than expected, they may then refer you to a specialist for the extraction. An oral surgeon is usually involved when there are risks to the underlying nerves or your jaw structure.
What to Expect During the Dental Extraction Procedure
Recovery Period After A Tooth Extraction
Recovery is typically between a few days to a couple of weeks. However, this will depend on the size of the tooth removed and how complex the extraction was. It also relies on you practising good oral health and dental care.
To help speed up healing you should avoid hard foods in the 24-48 hours post-extraction. You should also avoid hot drinks, smoking and any strenuous activity. You should also ensure no vigorous tooth brushing near the wound or mouth washing as this can dislodge the blood clot.
How Long Does Pain Last Following Tooth Extraction?
A small amount of bleeding and pain is normal in the days following the procedure. Should you experience significant bleeding or worsening pain, you should let your dentist know immediately.
To manage any pain and discomfort, your dentist may prescribe pain relief or suggest using over the counter painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen.
Once you are comfortable with proceeding, your dentist will administer pain relief in the form of a local anesthetic. This is injected into your gums to completely numb the area where the extraction is being done. They may also offer you some laughing gas to help you feel relaxed and reduce anxiety about the procedure.
If at any time you experience pain, you must notify your dentist immediately as they will be able to administer more anesthetic. You should only be aware of a tugging sensation and the sound of the tools used in the extraction.
A tool known as an elevator will be used to lift and loosen the tooth followed by surgical forceps to remove it. If required, your dentist will place a few dissolvable stitches in your gum. This aids in speeding up the closure of the wound and helps eliminate the risk of food becoming trapped in the space left behind.
A piece of cotton gauze will also be placed over the extraction site to aid in the absorption of blood and aid in clotting. A blood clot will form in the space left behind within 8-12 hours. This protects the underlying tissue and bone while healing.
